Political and Security Committee (PSC)
PSC (Political and Security Committee) - A short introduction by Ambassador Olof Skoog
The Political and Security Committee (PSC) is responsible for the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CSFP) and the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).
The Committee’s mandate includes monitoring the international situation, providing policy proposals to the Council of Ministers and coordinating and monitoring the work of the Council working parties within the CFSP. The PSC leads work on EU security and defence policy by providing guidelines to the Military Committee (EUMC) and the Committee for Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management (CIVCOM), and political control and strategic management of the EU’s military and civilian crisis management operations.
The PSC was established by the Treaty of Nice, succeeding the previous Political Committee (POCO). The Member States are represented in the PSC at ambassador level. Sweden is represented by CFSP Ambassador Olof Skoog. The Committee meets twice a week, with extra meetings as required. The PSC regularly meets with the EU’s spokesman on foreign policy, Secretary-General of the Council and High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana.
