Asia-Oceania Working Party (COASI)
This group has overall responsibility for issues concerning EU relations with Asia and Oceania. The group meets four times a month and discusses both current foreign and security policy issues in the region and how the EU’s strategy and policy can and should be developed in the longer term.
Common positions are drafted and decisions are made on joint action in the form of démarches, Council conclusions, troika visits, EU statements, etc. Political dialogue is an important part of EU relations with Asia and Oceania. During the Swedish Presidency of the EU in the second half of 2009, summits will be held with India and China, along with a range of dialogue meetings at foreign minister level and lower echelons.
