During the UNGA week, political leaders from all over the world gather in New York, where the UN General Assembly traditionally opens its working session in September. The meeting agenda includes a great number of meetings for the Swedish EU Presidency. On 22 September, the heads of state and government will meet for a climate summit in order to pick up the pace ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December. The UN General Assembly opens on 23 September and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will give a speech on behalf of the EU.

The Swedish ministers will chair a great number of bilateral meetings, as well as Troika meetings, in their capacity as representatives of the EU Presidency. The agenda includes meetings held on foreign minister level between the EU and the USA and the EU and Russia. Carl Bildt will also be leading Troika meetings with Japan, India, Ukraine, Iraq and the Palestinian Authority, among others.

Gunilla Carlsson will be leading Troika meetings with Cuba among others, and will participate in bilateral meetings with organisations such as UNAIDS and UNHCR.
